DIY Foil River: Gentle Water Play for Dogs & Kids

Requires extra equipment

Looking for a cool activity on a hot day?

The Foil River is a creative, hands-on water game that kids and dogs alike will love!

With just a roll of foil and a small slope, children can build their own “river” and send kibble, fruit, or toys floating downstream.

It’s part craft project, part water play, and all fun.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • Roll of aluminum foil (not pre-cut sheets)
  • Sloped outdoor space
  • Rock or heavy object
  • Tray, pan, or shallow container
  • Large bucket of water
  • Cups or small containers for pouring
  • Small items to send down the river (such as kibble, small pieces of fruit, or lightweight toys)

HOW TO PLAY

Step 1: Build Your River
Unroll foil down your slope and fold the sides up to make “banks.” Secure the top with a rock so it stays in place.

Step 2: Set Up the Catch Zone

Place a tray or shallow pan at the bottom of your river to catch the water and floating items.

Step 3: Create a Water Station:

Place a large storage container or bucket filled with water at the starting point of the river. This will serve as your water source for pouring. Give each child a cup for pouring. They can take turns pouring water at the top and watching it rush down the river.

Step 4: Add Floating Items
Children can drop in kibble, fruit, or small toys and see how they race down the river! They can experiment with speed - pouring slowly vs. dumping the whole cup, or try different objects to see how they move.

PRO TIPS

  • Best done on a warm day outside—it will get wet and splashy!
  • Choose dog-safe foods if your pup will be “helping” at the bottom of the river.
  • Extend the fun by making the river longer or adding bends for an extra challenge.
  • Once dry, fold the foil and store it away so you can reuse it next time your children play foil river.

Insights from Dominika: Super fun activity! We used kibble, apple pieces, and small cubes of frozen chicken. Lola loved it all (well, not so much the apples, but loved the rest). If you send toys down the river, make sure they are small, light, and round, with no sharp edges. If your children love water activities, this one is a winner.
