Simon Says - Train your dog. Train your kid.

Requires using cues your dog already knows

Looking for a playful way to train both your dog and your child? "Simon Says" is the perfect game! This classic activity not only keeps everyone entertained and moving, but it also helps kids practice reacting to cues and reinforces your dog’s training at the same time. The best part? It’s silly, collaborative, and just as fun for the grown-ups giving cues as it is for the participants.

PRO TIP: This activity is best for dogs who know a few cues.

WHAT YOU NEED

  • 1 yoga mat(s) per participant (or another similar non-slip surface)
  • Treats for your dog in a small container
  • Snacks for your kids in a small container

HOW TO PLAY

Step 1: Set Up the Space

Lay out yoga mats for each child, so they have their “training station.” This helps give structure and keeps everyone from crowding the dog.

Step 2: Give the Cue

Start simple: give your dog a cue that they know (like sit or down). Once your dog performs the behavior, the kids copy it. They can also do the behavior at the same time as the dog. Reward with treats and snacks and praise generously.

Step 3: Mix in Fun Behaviors

Keep things lively by mixing basic and silly commands. Great ones to try:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Spin
  • Shake
  • Roll Over
  • Back Up
  • Take a Bow / Downward facing dog
  • Leave it
  • Stand on one leg
  • Cobra post

The sillier the command, the more giggles you’ll get from the kids.

PRO TIPS

  • You can even use the same treats for both kids and dogs ( Cheerios or tiny cheese bits). Just be mindful of choking hazards for under-3s.

  • If you’re using different snacks, stick to dog-safe options for kids so there’s no worry if things get mixed up.
